A Quiet Sunday afternoon

Sitting here on a Sunday afternoon, waiting for the next weather event to happen, browsing my Ebay site . It’s been a long rough winter, with way to many snow days, and just like everyone else, I am in need of spring.  Yesterday as I sat on the couch trying to recover from my unruly sinuses, my cell phone made that beautiful “cha-ching” sound.  That’s the sound of someone making a purchase from my Ebay site.

That “cha-ching” has been happening for me, at a nice pace lately, it makes me love thrifting even more.  Going through my closets and weeding out the ” I don’t want no more” items, and realizing I can sell this, is a nice feeling.  An even bigger thrill is browsing my local thrift stores, finding those deals that I know I can sell on Ebay and make some cash doing it.

I dabble in some sports jerseys and t-shirts, always trying to purchase Phillies or Eagles merchandise that I can wear if they don’t sell.  Women’s dresses and skirts are a pretty good seller, but it’s never certain someone will buy what you post, but sometimes you get lucky.

Mostly I enjoy the shopping, looking for fashion and knowing I can make someone else happy, and make some cash doing it.  It always amazes me what you can find at your local Goodwill or Salvation Army, sometimes brand new with tags.  Even the goodies that aren’t new, I have found some pretty cool stuff.

It’s like looking for treasure, always wondering what golden egg I might find, and that’s the fun in it. That vintage concert shirt that you pay .99 for and sell for $14.99, or that sports shirt that you pay $1.99 and sell for $19.99, I love it!!

The hardest part for me is going in to the thrift store and finding that balance of shopping for me, or shopping to sell. Check me out on Ebay under thriftshopper707, and remember, thrift shopping is an art.

Building outfits with my thrifty finds

The pictures I have posted are collages of the outfits I build with my thrifty finds.

Each outfit has at least one thrifted piece, usually more. Some are the whole outfit, except the jewelry. I combine my Silpada Design jewels with my thrifty finds and build a stunning outfit.

I now wear name brands such as J.Crew, Liz Claibourne, Banana Republic, and Ann Taylor. I have thrifted handbags such as Nine West, Tommy Hilfiger, and Tignanello.

I am relatively new to thrifting and this will be my first seasonal change, and I am excited. I have already started to shop for long sleeves and jackets, and can’t wait till I score a pair of boots.

I love getting my pieces home and building an outfit from what I have in my closet. How do you thrift shop? Do you look for specifics, or just what you like?

Here is to never paying full pice again!!

PhotoGrid_1372722704850[1]These photo collages are all outfits I put together for a day at work, all done with most of the clothing being purchased at thrift stores. I love mixing and matching my thrifty finds along with my handbags, which most are also thrifted, and bringing it all together with my beautiful Silpada jewelry. It has become my obsession to dress myself on the cheap, now that I am aware that I can have designer labels without the price, I can’t bring myself to pay full price for my clothes. I have labels such as J. Crew, Banana Republic, Talbots, Chico’s, Liz Claiborne and Ann Taylor to name a few, I wouldn’t be able to afford some of these brands without thrifting. My handbags are Nine West, Sophia Caperelli and Tignanello along with others. So to sum it up, Goodwill and Salvation Army are my Macy’s, why pay full price when you don’t have to.

Rainy day roadtrip to the Goodwill outlet store

20130711_150733[1]It was a rainy Thursday morning and I was ready to get out of the house, so since my son was at a friends, the three of us set off on a roadtrip. We decided to try the Goodwill Outlet store in Bellmawr, about 45 minutes away. This Goodwill is a buy by the pound for .99 store, where you have to dig through bins for your treasure. I already had it mapped out that another Goodwill was in the area, just in case we had time to hit that one too. I was excited, not sure what to expect as we pulled up to the outlet. I was not really prepared for what I was about to experience, but I was still willing to try it. Through out the store there were table length bins filled with what I was hoping were treasures, but soon realized that was not the case. My first clue should have been the rubber gloves you could buy for .50 cents. As we began our search, I decided to just go with it, I’m no snob, but even my daughter was kinda freaked out by it. Although I somehow managed to dig a true treasure up from under a pile of trash, it was slim pickings for us. My husband said he thinks that the outlet is the dumping ground for all the stuff that they can’t sell at the other Goodwill stores, and I think he is right. I found my Tignanello handbag, which retails for more than $70 at Macy’s, Amazon and even QVC, and I found a nice pair of sandals, but to be honest with all my fellow thrifters, it felt like I was digging through trash dumpsters. It made me realize, there are definitely different levels of thrifting, and this one is not for me. Watching people, and how happy they were, it really is true, one mans trash is another man’s treasure. I mostly go looking for clothes, and they had very few, it was mainly household items, shoes and discarded electronics. In a way, it was kind of sad, especially when my daughter found a collage picture frame that still had the family pictures in it. She wanted to know, why would someone donate this?. I told her that it must have come from a home that was abandoned, and then cleaned out by someone else, and they just sent everything to the thrift store. I ended up with a purse and a pair of sandals for $3.44, so it was an adventure for sure, and off we went to the other Goodwill up the street. This one was small but more like what I am used to. We wandered around looking at clothes and shoes and other various items, I did find a couple skirts and a shirt, but my husband got the big score at this one. He found an all glass chess set, that also had a tic, tac toe board and a backgammon board with it for $4.99, and all the pieces were in tack. My husband is working on a project for my son, making a base for the glass board on a chunk of wood he has and it will be awesome when he is done. He has been pricing chess pieces online and they were at least $40, so he got a great deal. Our rainy day adventure was not a total loss, and now I understand, not all Goodwill’s are created equal, and there really are different levels of thrift store shopping!!
